TDS tests dissolved solids in water. Generally, a lower TDS value indicates fewer dissolved solids in the water, meaning the water is purer. A higher TDS value indicates more dissolved solids, but it does not determine whether they are harmful. According to the Standards for Drinking Water Quality, a safe TDS value is < 50 ppm.
